Primitivo has its home in Puglia and is thought to have arrived there from Croatia. In the 1990s, Primitivo was discovered to be genetically the same as Zinfandel. This link sparked an interest among the growers in Puglia, who were keen to ride on the success of Zinfandel. Quality has improved tremendously and there are now many fine examples of varietal wines being made with the Primitivo grape. Primitivo wines are big and powerful with flavours of raspberry, blackberry, cherry, and plum, along with peppery notes. For the best examples, head straight for Primitivo di Manduria DOP.
