Nebbiolo

NEBBIOLO

Nebbiolo is considered by many to be Italy's most noble red grape. It's also one of its oldest, having been first mentioned in the 13th century. The name Nebbiolo derives from the word nebbia, meaning fog, and is thought to be related to either the thick bloom that covers the ripe berries or to the fog that often covers the hills in Piemonte during harvest time. Nebbiolo based wines are pale ruby-garnet in colour, turning orange with bottle age. Expect intense aromas of red cherry, rose, violet, tar, and liquorice. As Nebbiolo wines mature they develop greater complexity showing refined aromas of dried red fruit, withered rose petals, sweet spices, leather and truffles. Structurally, Nebbiolo wines possess high levels of acid, tannin, alcohol, and extract, which equates to great longevity. The best Nebbiolos combine perfume and finesse within this powerful framework.
