Torri Cantine craft their organic Pecorino d'Abruzzo DOC from hand-picked grapes grown in a picturesque valley overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The 2020 vintage has an enticing aroma of summer flowers and ripe yellow fruits. The palate is fresh and rich with a core of minerality on the finish. Drink now to 2025.

The Pecorino grapes in this Pecorino d’Abruzzo DOC come from 30-year-old vines in vineyards around Controguerra. Here the vineyards have optimal exposure, and the vines produce a medium to low yield. A wide diurnal temperature range helps the grapes maintain aromas, freshness, and acidity. Harvesting of the grapes takes place by hand at the end of September. Torri's Pecorino d'Abruzzo DOC is made exclusively in stainless steel tanks with skin maceration at low temperatures.

Torri Cantine, Abruzzo

Since 1966 Torri Cantine can be found in the beautiful and fertile Teramo hills. Their 60 acres of vineyards surround Colonnella, Controguerra, and Torano and sit some 100 to 300 metres above sea level in graceful rolling hills.

Pecorino

Pecorino, not to be confused with the Italian cheese of the same name, is an ancient grape variety native to the region of Marche. It's a hardy grape and naturally low yielding. However, yields can be inconsistent from year to year, which may explain why Pecorino was virtually extinct by the 1970s.

Thankfully Pecorino was saved from extinction by a winemaker called Guido Cocci Grifoni in the early 1980s. Guido needed a white grape variety that ripened at high altitude as the widely grown Verdicchio grape didn't thrive in his area of Marche. Pecorino fitted the bill. Whilst other winemakers in Marche didn't follow Guido's lead, the Pecorino grape was widely adopted in the region of Abruzzo.

Abruzzo DOC

Abruzzo DOC, best known as the home of the Montepulciano grape, is a wine appellation in the region of Abruzzo. It's located in central Italy to the east of the Apennine mountain range. The DOC was established in 2010. For Pecorino to be labelled Abruzzo DOC, it must contain a minimum of 85% Pecorino and have a minimum alcohol level of 11.5%.
