Lacrima di Morro d'Alba DOC is one of the rarest and lesser-known Italian wines made from Marche’s native and equally rare grape of the same name. Vinicola Giusti's expression of Lacrima di Morro d’Alba DOC is laced with aromas of old roses, undergrowth, flowers, and violets. Medium to full-bodied with well-balanced acidity, Lacrima di Morro d’Alba DOC is soft, fresh and pleasantly tannic with hints of damsons, currants and blueberries. Drink now to 2030.
Vinicola Giusti harvests their grapes by hand over four occasions from mid-September, selecting the bunches when they are perfectly mature. Fermentation takes place in steel tanks for around 20 days. The wine is then transferred to oak barrels, where it matures for four to six months. After this, the wine is bottled and aged for four months.
Vinicola Giusti, Marche
Vinicola Giusti is a small family-run vineyard of 12 hectares. This small family vineyard, dedicated solely to the Lacrima di Morro d’Alba grape, is located in Ancona on the Adriatic coast in the region of Marche. The proximity to the Adriatic combined with 300 meters of altitude creates a unique micro-climate that ensures exceptional growing conditions.
Lacrima is an ancient grape native to the Marche region. When these grapes reach full ripeness, they have a tendency to split and leak their juices, forming teardrops on the grape. It's thought the name Lacrima (meaning teardrop) is derived from this. This characteristic, which attracts pests, coupled with the phylloxera crisis, brought this grape to the brink of extinction. Fortunately, in the mid-1980s, a group of determined local winemakers saved it from disappearing. Typically, Lacrima varietals will show aromas of rose, violets and stewed strawberries and flavours of blueberry and sweet spice.
