Campi Flegrei Piedirosso DOC, one of the most famous volcanic wines, is made entirely from the ancient Piedirosso grape grown in the Naples area right under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Intense ruby red in colour with aromatic hints of blackberry, cherry, apple, and orange blossom, Campi Flegrei Piedirosso DOC from Salvatore Martusciello is full-bodied with low tannins, a pleasant mineral flavour and distinct notes of gooseberries, rhubarb and raspberries. Drink now to 2029.
The Piedirosso is one of the oldest grape varieties of Campania and even gets a mention by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia. The name Piedirosso derives from the colour and shape of the vine stalk, which, when harvested, becomes reddish reminiscent of a dove's foot. Piedirosso wines tend to be full-bodied, ruby red with soft tannins and good minerality. Flavours range from cherry and plum to underwood and dried herbs.
