Barolo DOCG Bussia from Cantina Moscone is an outstanding expression of Nebbiolo made with passion, care and time. The name Bussia represents a zone within the Barolo DOCG appellation that produces wines of distinction. Light brick in colour, this Barolo DOCG Bussia is restrained and elegant at the same time with notes of rose water and tar. Full-bodied with round tannins, it is smooth to the palate with a long and ever-changing finish. Drink now to 2035.
Moscone harvests their grapes by hand in late October. Extended traditional maceration and fermentation are followed by 30 months of ageing in large oak botti. Botti can be used for many decades and become encrusted with tartrates and sediment, preventing the transfer of flavours typical of smaller new oak barrels to the wine. Many traditionalists prefer the botti as it allows the grape to express its own character without the distraction of the flavours of new oak. After ageing, Moscone's Barolo spends a further year refining in steel tanks before being bottled. Bottles are stored in their cellars for two years before being released to the market.
Cantina Moscone, Piedmont
A family run business since 1877, Cantina Moscone's 18 hectares vineyards are located in Monforte d’Alba. Five hectares of their vineyards are set within the prestigious cru, Bussia. Tradition and innovations are at the forefront of this business which helps to create outstanding wines.
Nebbiolo is a traditional Italian grape grown almost exclusively in Piedmont and some parts of northern Lombardy. Nebbiolo grapes ripen late and are harvested in the Autumn when thick fogs cover the vineyards of Piedmont, hence the name Nebbiolo (nebbia is the Italian word for fog). Notoriously difficult to grow, Nebbiolo wines tend to be medium to full-bodied with chewy tannins and high acidity. Its natural characteristics make Nebbiolo wines ideal for ageing. When young, Nebbiolo wines tend to have aromas of plum, cherry, and strawberry. As Nebbiolo wines age they develop the classic tar and rose characteristics they are famous for.
